Reb Yehoshua Ozer Halperin of Manchester was a close Talmud and later a Gabbai of the Manchester Rosh Yeshiva, Reb Yehuda Zev Segal ZT”L (“Rosh Yeshiva”). It wasn’t surprising that when Reb Yehoshua Ozer got married in Montreal, the Rosh Yeshiva agreed to fly in from England for the wedding. While in town, the Rosh Yeshiva was hosted by “Reb Yoni” who was to drive the Rosh Yeshiva to the wedding and to attend the wedding with him. As is often the case, the wedding got off to a late start. At 11:30 PM, the Rosh Yeshiva informed Reb Yoni that he was ready to be taken back to his house...

In Parshas Shmini, we encounter one of the Torah's most tragic episodes: the sudden death of Aharon's sons, Nadav and Avihu, as they bring an unauthorized offering before Hashem. The Torah describes their actions with striking brevity: "And Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aharon, each took his fire pan, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered a strange fire before Hashem, which He had not commanded them." (Vayikra 10:1). The consequences were swift and severe, "Fire went out from before Hashem and consumed them, and they died before Hashem." (Vayikra 10:2)...

"…אָדָם כִּי יַקְרִיב מִכֶּם קָרְבָּן לַה” - When a person will bring from you, an offering to Hashem… (Vayikra 1:2)


The customary term that the Torah uses in reference to a Jewish person is the Hebrew word “Ish”—a man. In this instance however, the Torah uses the word “Adam”—a person. 


Rashi (based upon an old text of the Midrash Tanchuma Siman 2) explains that the term Adam is specifically employed by the verse to teach us an important lesson. It teaches us that we must be very careful to ensure that what be bring for Hashem is free of any theft...
