Rav Laizer Yudel Finkel ZT”L was the last Rosh Yeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva in Poland. The vast majority of the students of the Mirrer Yeshiva escaped Nazi-occupied Europe to Kobe, Japan and then to Shanghai. The Rosh Yeshiva eventually re-established the Mirrer Yeshiva in Jerusalem and a large percentage of the students that were in Shanghai rejoined him, including his son-in-law, Rav Chaim Shmulevitz ZT”L, who eventually succeeded him.

In the small Polish town of Radin where he lived, the Chofetz Chaim once received a letter containing a substantial sum of money. The sender had addressed it to "The Famous Rabbi of Radin." The Chofetz Chaim’s heart raced when he saw the unexpected bounty as his struggling Yeshiva desperately needed the funds.


Upon opening the letter, the Chofetz Chaim realized there was a problem. While he was indeed a rabbi in Radin, there was another distinguished rabbi in town who also had a significant following. The ambiguous address meant the sender might have intended the money for the other rabbi....

The Gemorah in Brachos discusses the very high level of Emes (truth) practiced by Rav Safra. This level of Emes is called, “Dover Emes Bilvavo” – speaking truth in one’s heart. This means honoring an intention or commitment that one makes to oneself, as if it was actually verbalized and promised to another.  The Gemorah relates that Rav Safra was once sitting in his store when a customer walked in and offered him a price for some merchandise. Rav Safra did not respond because he was in the middle of reciting Kriyas Shema at that moment. Although nothing was verbailzed, Rav Safra resolved to sell the item to the customer at the price that was offered. The customer then mistook Rav Safra’s silence as a rejection of his offer and offered a higher price...
