Parsha After Bilaam invited Balak’s messengers to sleep over at his house, Hashem asked Bilaam who the messengers were. Bilaam responded:

“And Bilaam said to Hashem, ‘Balak Ben Tzipor, the King of Moav, sent them to me.’” (Numbers 22:10)


Why did Bilaam add that Balak was the king of Moav? Didn’t Hashem know who Balak was?

The Ohr HaChaim explains that by adding that Balak was the king of Moav, Bilaam was telling Hashem that he had invited Balak’s messengers to sleep in his home out of Kavod Malchus – respect for royalty. We know, in fact, from an earlier Rashi that Bilaam’s underlying motivation was far less noble...

Parsha “Therefore the rulers said, ‘let us enter into Cheshbon…’ (Numbers 21:27).”


The Gemorah in Bava Basra 78b provides the following interpretation of this Pasuk: “Therefore the rulers - of their [evil] inclinations said, ‘Come and consider the [Cheshbon or] accounting of the world – which is the [small] loss incurred by doing a Mitzva versus the [large] gain earned through it, and the [small] gain obtained by doing an Avaira versus the [large] loss incurred through it...”

Parsha Rav Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg ZT”L asks in Tochachos Mussar #45, that we find that Moshe Rabbeinu had always sought Hashem’s forgiveness of Klal Yisroel whenever they fell or stumbled. For example, regarding the sin of the Eigel, the golden calf, the Gemorah in Brachos 32a elaborates on the extent of Moshe’s many prayers and self-sacrifice on their behalf. Yet, by Korach we find the exact opposite. In BaMidbar 16:15 he asks Hashem not to pay any attention to their offerings. Why was this so? [Also, in 16:29-30, Moshe stipulates that Korach’s followers will meet a very tragic end which is not in concert with Moshe’s general method of dealing with sinners.]....
